management of fisheries

A report has been posted on the BBC web-site today (19th September) on a study of fisheries which was published in the journal 'Science' yesterday (18th September). The global survey found that fisheries managed using individual transferable quotas (ITQs) were half as likely to collapse as others, because long-term quotas give fishermen a stake in conserving fish 'stocks' (populations). Without these quotas, the fishing 'free-for-all' causes fish populations to collapse...
The study was published a day after the European Commission announced a full review of the E.U.'s Common Fisheries Policy, on 17th September.
