'Pedigree dogs exposed'

This was a documentary shown yesterday (19th August) on BBC 1.
The BBC press office release states: '... Seventy-five per cent of the seven million dogs in the UK are pedigrees, and they cost their owners over £10m in vet fees every week.
This in-depth investigation suggests they are in serious trouble, plagued by genetic disease due to decades of inbreeding.
They are also suffering acute problems because of the showring's emphasis on looks over and above function and health ...'.
The Kennel Club sets the breed standards; their annual dog show, Cruft's, is sponsored by Iams, the pet-food manufacturing company, which is owned by Procter & Gamble and uses animal testing on their products.
For the next six days, you can view the programme at or download it via www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00d4ljk
For more information on Iams, go to the Uncaged web-site at www.uncaged.co.uk/news.htm
Remember that livestock animals are also bred and exploited to their physical limits.
