petition for a universal declaration on animal welfare

The RSPCA, WSPA (the World Society for the Protection of Animals) and America's largest welfare organisation, the Humane Society, and other groups from 140 countries, are working together in a unique global campaign to get recognition for animal welfare at the United Nations. The 'Animals matter to me' campaign is calling for the U.N. to adopt a universal declaration on animal welfare, similar to earlier initiatives for human rights. The campaign wants 10 million signatures on their petition. Five U.N. member states (Costa Rica, Kenya, India, the Czech Republic and the Philippines) have formed a steering group to take the initiative to the U.N. .
