On the BBC 1 news yesterday (5th August) there was a report on
primate species facing extinction. Up to 50% of primate species in
Africa, Asia and South America face extinction because of loss of
habitat, hunting and the trade in wild animals; more than 70% of
primates in Asia are now listed as 'endangered'. The IUCN 'Red List of
Threatened Species' is the most detailed survey of the Earth's
mammals, and will be presented at the IUCN World Conservation Congress
in October 2008. (The IUCN is the International Union for the Conservation
of Nature and Natural Resources.)
