badger cull in England rejected

Today (4th July) it was announced on the BBC news that DEFRA has rejected the proposed cull of badgers in England, despite lobbying by the dairy industry. Research funded by the government concluded that a cull of badgers would not solve the problem of TB in dairy cattle, as badgers are not the cause of infection, but rather the bad conditions suffered by dairy cattle. The RSPCA and Viva! campaigned against the proposed cull, and the general public were opposed to culling.

The badger cull was even discussed on the early evening 'One' show on BBC 1. Farmers in England are now threatening to illegally kill badgers on their land in defiance of DEFRA's decision, although badgers are a protected species.
A badger cull is to go ahead in Wales as an experiment, but you can still protest against this - send e-letters to Hilary Benn MP at DEFRA and to Elin Thomas AM of the Welsh Assembly. Sample letters and email addresses are available on Viva!'s web-site at www.viva.org.uk/campaigns/badgers/action.htm
