'Meat without feet' is the title of a big article published in 'The
Times' on 9th May. PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, an
international organisation based in the US) has offered a reward of 1
million dollars to 'the first person to come up with a method to produce
commercially viable quantities of in vitro meat at competitive prices by
2012'. The rules specify that this meat must be chicken, with the same
taste and texture as meat from a dead bird. PETA says that the world's
abuse of chickens is the most urgent issue to be tackled in the livestock
industry, as billions of them are slaughtered each year - 100 times more
than pigs and 200 times more than cattle.
This is a controversial
move by PETA, as many vegans and vegetarians in the organisation are
opposed to the production and consumption of meat in whatever form and from
whatever source.
