'The best solution would be for us all to become vegetarians'

This was the suggestion of the head of the UN climate agency, Yvo de Boer, at UN-led climate talks in Germany last week. The suggestion was made in response to criticism of measures to tackle climate change, ie growing carbon-cutting bio-fuel crops, partly causing the current escalation in food and energy costs.
Patrick Wall, chairman of the European Food Safety Authority, asked whether it is 'morally or ethically correct' to be feeding grain to animals while people starve. Unfortunately, his solution is to feed livestock animals to other livestock animals, and then feed those to people, so adding yet another unnecessary stage to the food-production system.
The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation, hosting the food crisis summit in Rome last week, made dire warnings of global catastrophe unless food reaches the people who are starving around the world.
