Responses to Monbiot's 'flesh' article

George Monbiot's article (see 'Monbiot's "flesh" article' news item below), printed in 'The Guardian' on 15th April, and then posted online, has generated a lot of online comments and debate - not only relating to what he says about food, bio-fuels and hunger, but also to his statement that vegans are 'pearl grey', ie unhealthy and unnatural.
The responses include this one from Nigel Winter, posted on 16th April:

The world faces a stark choice - do we feed people, or farmed animals? Good quality crops are being wasted as animal feed - 'producing' far less food in the form of meat. We could feed three times as many people if we ate the plant crops directly.
Nigel Winter, CEO of the Vegan Society agrees, "A vegan Britain could indeed make a major contribution to global food stocks."
He goes on to say, "We invite George Monbiot to call us up today - our rosy-cheeked vegan staff are eager to teach him to thrive on a plant-based diet."
Biofuels made from food, and the huge climate change impact of animal farming, only deepen the crisis. The time has come for the UK to break our addiction to eating meat.
