On 9th
April, we will be having a vegan-organic event at the
Friends' Meeting-house.
We will be showing the Vegan Organic Network's new DVD, an introduction to vegan-organic growing, and also a VON PowerPoint presentation.
We are buying a copy of the VON's book 'Growing Green' and it will be available to look at on the evening, along with several issues of the VON magazine and some of their free fact sheets.
All welcome.
Vegan-organics or stock-free farming is a system which does not use livestock, or animal products such as manure, or slaughterhouse by-products (blood, fish meal, bone meal, etc). It also avoids any use of artificial chemical products (synthetic fertiliser, pesticides, growth regulators) and genetically- modified organisms.
To preserve soil fertility, vegan-organic growing uses green manures, composts and mulches made of plant-based materials, and any other long-term method which is ecologically viable and which does not rely on any form of animal exploitation.
Vegan-organics adheres to the principles of biodiversity, reduced working of the soil, and the use of perennial and native plants. Energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact is achieved by buying and selling produce locally.
Vegan-organics seeks an equilibrium between cultivated and wild land, by developing habitats for natural predators, ie hedges and ponds. The system tolerates competing wildlife and accepts that part of the harvest goes to nature.
The vegan-organic system is not animal-free, but, on the contrary, supports wildlife - only the exploitation of captive animals and their products and by-products are excluded. By nourishing the soil and reducing the amount that it is worked, an active fauna naturally enriches and improves the soil. There is also no hunting, shooting or fishing on vegan-organic land, and no poisoning or trapping of wildlife.
A vegan-organic system uses far less land and water than conventional agriculture which includes livestock, and does not pollute or damage the environment. It grows food for people without the industrial production line of birth and slaughter of billions of livestock animals.
Vegan-organics is the best way to produce vegan plant foods.
