We will be meeting on the 5th September at the Friends' Meeting-house for an evening of mega mushrooms...
Mushrooms and fungi are highly nutritious, are a food which is seasonal and can be local, and come in a huge variety of species, commercially grown and wild - and mushrooms are delicious!
We will talk about the variety of mushrooms available in the shops and how they can be eaten cooked or raw, and bought fresh, dried or preserved. We will look at some different ways to use them, and there will be some mushrooms to taste.
If you would like to, you could bring a handful of your own favourite kind of mushroom to share, and tell us the way you like to use them.
All welcome.
portabella, ceps, giant puffball, oyster, chicken of the woods, enoki, shiitake, morel, straw, black truffle, field, chanterelle, cauliflower fungus, blewit, reishi, maitake, hedgehog fungus, beefsteak fungus, button/closed cap/open cap/big flat cap...
We had a very pleasant evening - we tasted rehydrated porcini and oyster mushrooms with triangles of crisp wholemeal toast, juicy grilled big flat mushrooms, Italian mushroom 'bruschetta' (pieces) preserved in oil and served on wholemeal pasta, lightly sauteed oyster mushrooms on fresh mango and baby spinach salad, raw baby button mushrooms in lemon juice, olive oil and black pepper, and bought mushroom pate on rough oatcakes. We had a chat about mushrooms and our favourite recipes, and ended up by drinking coffee and talking till nearly 11! We each went home with a free booklet of mushroom recipes produced by the group.
