26 animals are slaughtered every second in the UK for food

It is estimated that, in the UK, 900 million animals are slaughtered every year for food:
= 2.4 million every day
= 100,000 an hour
= 1,600 every minute
= 26 every second

This total includes 9.35 million pigs, nearly 15 million sheep, 28 million turkeys, 20 million ducks, over 850 million chickens and 2.25 million cattle.

The total does not include all the animals which die of disease or are killed and not slaughtered for food.
The total does not include the hundreds of millions of farmed fish and wild fish and shellfish killed every year in the UK; also a huge percentage of wild fish are fed to farmed fish or dumped back into the sea dead by fishermen.

The total does not include all the many thousands of animals and fish which die every day in the UK outside the food industry, ie for sport, on the road, because of cruelty or neglect, in experiments, by trapping and shooting, 'pest control', culling, cat predation, etc.
